“Amazing location! Unbelievable views! It’ll be fit for a Sunset Magazine shoot when it’s done. I’m glad we found it while it’s still a secret. The staff are helpful and friendly. A true PNW treasure. Can’t wait to come here next year.”
– Sarah M. (Yelp)

“We got here yesterday and already added another day to our stay. It’s brand new & still in construction but don’t let that detour you! The spots are big, easy to get in & out of. The view is great! The front desk was really nice and helpful. We’d definitely stay again.”
– Lynda C. (Yelp)

“We came to the coast to beat the heat in our area and we knew we had a slim chance of finding a spot on the coast. Luckily Yelp came to the rescues and helped us find this diamond in the rough! It is currently still under construction however, this is already a wonderful place to RV.

There is plenty of room between each space and a great grassy area for the kids and dogs to play. The bay view and beach area are beautiful, and the kids love it! The customer service is informative and friendly. The plan was to stay one or two nights and we extended our stay to 5 nights!”
– Trinity B. (Yelp)

How To Go Crabbing in Coos Bay

In our last blog we discussed how much fun crabbing in Coos Bay could be while you stay at the Bay Point Landing Luxury RV Resort. In the process, we also touched on some of the best spots to crab and some of the finer legal points regarding licenses and such. Today we’re going to continue from that and describe some of the needed gear, crab bait, and how to go crabbing.

Gearing Up

[row]

[column columns=7]

So, you’re aware you need a license and that’s the first part of your gear. The rest of your gear includes a variety of different types of items. The next thing to bring is going to be a crab measuring device, as it will help you determine which crabs you can keep and which you’ve got to return.

You’re also going to need to acquire pots or rings, a cooler, bait holders, and bait. Before you start, you’ll want to make sure there aren’t any kinks or knots in the lines for your crab pots or rings. You must also mark your buoys to ensure that you know which pots yours are. Don’t worry, you don’t necessarily need to buy all this stuff, you can often find it for rent so the investment cost isn’t as high as you might think. And luckily, we have some items to offer for you!

Baiting the Crab

You’ve got all your gear and you’re in the right place. Next you need to bait your gear. Fresh bait is best, and you’ve got some options; turkey, chicken mink, fish carcass, shad, herring, clams, and more. Make sure that your bait is secured. One word of warning, you’ll find that some bait attracts seals and sea lions. You can use bait they won’t be interested in like turkey legs or you can put your bait in a bait bag. That wraps up the gear and bait portion of our little tutorial. Check back next time for setting and retrieving your catch.

Coos Bay and the Bay Point Landing RV Resort

Shellfishing

One of the noteworthy assets of the Bay is that it is home to a significant amount of shellfish, especially in the lower section of the bay. This means rich clamming and crabbing opportunities abound in a full saltwater environment.

In fact, the Bay Point Landing RV resort on the shore of Coos Bay, showcases crabbing as an activity. Guests can leisurely walk along shoreline looking for crabs to cook over a fire. Bay Point Landing also offers crab pots onsite for guests and allows direct walking access to the beach from the grounds.
