Watching Birds around Coos Bay

Southern Oregon is a great place to view wildlife that you might never have seen in other areas. The South Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve has 5,000 acres of saltwater marshes and mixed conifer forests that will attract a wide variety of birds.

This time we thought we’d mention one of the nearby fun activities. Exploring Umpqua River History

The Umpqua River is about 111 miles long and is one of the major rivers in Oregon. Several bands of Native Americans have lived in the Umpqua River Valley. The name of the river is derived from a Native American name for a place that was on the river itself, the rapids. Umpqua meant Thundering Water and this name is certainly appropriate to the rapids area.

Things to Do Along Umpqua

There are a host of things to do along this river. The Rogue-Umpqua Scenic Byway runs parallel to the river for much of its length and offers up a number of trails, waterfalls, and picnic sites. You could quite easily spend a day hiking different trails.

If you fancy yourself a fisherman, you can’t go wrong hitting up the North Umpqua for steelhead and salmon. If you just would like to watch them during the seasonal run, you can do that near the Winchester Dam. If you’re a daring sort you can raft down the river and experience its rapids that run from range II to V.

Oregon Lighthouses

There’s just something about lighthouses. They manage to be both historic, practical, and romantic all at once. Even better? Many of them are located not too far from where you’re planning on staying. So, you could pack a picnic and visit some of the lighthouses, or you could just head on out and plan to have something to eat and drink at any of the great establishments you’ll find in the area.

There are a few nearby ones that you can check out. The first is the Cape Arago Lighthouse located in Charleston. It was first illuminated in 1934 and has quite the fog horn. Unfortunately, this is one you’ll only be able to see from a distance as it is located on an island and is not accessible to the public.

Another option is the Coquille River Lighthouse in Bandon, just about 20 miles south of Coos Bay. It was built in 1896 and decommissioned in 1939. It was restored in 1979 and tours are available. Another option that’s not too far away is the Umpqua River Lighthouse in Winchester Bay. It was built in 1894 and offers tours as well.

Golden and Silver Falls

Located 24 miles away from Coos Bay you’ll be able to enjoy a long leisurely drive through some beautiful countryside to get to the Golden and Silver Falls State Natural Area. This hidden gem is in the dense coastal forests of the state.

It can be a little hard to find, but GPS and a map will get you there. Once there you’ll see a small parking and picnic area on the banks of the Glenn and Silver Creeks in a picturesque setting of maple, alder and Oregon myrtle trees.

Scenic Canyons

Once you’ve arrived you can enjoy a picnic and then hike through the scenic canyons in order to get to the amazing waterfalls that drop 100 feet to moss covered boulders. If this is your kind of thing, then you should consider hiking the 1.4 miles to the top of Golden Falls to see the amazing forest and falls from a bird’s eye view.

When you’re visiting Lakeside, you’re stepping into the shoes of many of the rich and famous during the early heyday of Hollywood. When we think of the Hollywood stars it is often with a sense of envy for their fame and their fortune. However, their own fame is their undoing.

They can’t travel freely without having hordes of fans tailing them. Sometimes they just want to escape from their lives. In the case of many, that escape was visiting Lakeside. People such as Bob Hope, Bing Crosby, Charles Laughton, Sidney Greenstreet, and Lilly Pons found refuge from their lives in Lakeside. Movie Producer Roy Currier built a stylish resort in the town as well.

Visiting Lakeside Today?

If you’re going to visit Lakeside you might be able to catch some of their fun events such as, the Lakeside Brewfest or the Crawdad festival. If none of those happen to be going on you can always get out and experience nature by hiking along the lake, the dunes, or the John Dellenback Dunes Trail. You can catch fish in the lake, streams, or rivers. Maybe you’d like to water ski or kayak in the lake? Either way, there’s plenty to do and see.

When you’re staying with us here at the Bay Point Landing Luxury RV Resort in January, you’ve the opportunity to see something exciting, but also somewhat disturbing. We’re talking about the Oregon King Tides.

The anticipated date in January is the 20th through the 22nd. Don’t fret too much if you can’t get out this way until February, they should return then, around the 18th through the 20th. So, we’ve talked about the when, but let’s focus a little more on the what.

What are King Tides?

Every year, in early winter, Oregon experiences higher high tides. Called King Tides, these high tides occur when the moon is closest to the earth. This program got its start in Australia in 2009, when they were documenting their highest tide in 18 years.

In 2010 British Columbia and Washington both started documenting their King Tides and a year later Oregon and San Francisco Bay also joined in. In 2012 the East Coast followed suit.

Why?

Why do we document King Tides? The why is largely focused around rising sea levels, predicted to rise over the next century. Parts of the Oregon coast are already at low elevations and have a high proximity to the shore line, leaving them vulnerable to flooding due to high water levels.

What happens only several times a year will be more frequent in the future and the King Tides experience is about documenting the higher tides and helping to prepare for rising sea levels and preparing coastal communities to deal with them.

Naturally, we’re inclined to take a good hard look at the coastal culture in Coos. You can find some great things on this adventurous coast. The Coos History Museum, for instance, can really stimulate your curiosity. It has over 250,000 photographs and 50,000 artifacts.

You can find yourself enraptured as you dig deeply into the expansive and culturally rich Native American history and culture, as well as examining the mining and logging traditions that helped shaped this area. If you don’t have a lot of time you can visit the Oregon Coast Historical Railway Museum. It features a Baldwin steam locomotive from 1922. This open-air museum also gives you a chance to check out some other railroad and logging equipment.

Artistic Traditions

So perhaps you’re artistically inclined rather than being interested in the history of the region. That’s all fine, because we’ve got you covered there as well. You can visit the Coos Art Museum which hosts as many as 24 changing exhibitions, which means that no matter how many times you visit, there’s always something new. You could also visit the Egyptian Theatre, which features Egyptian Revival décor. This is an amazing space and is frequently open for events, music, and movies.

Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area

The Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area is one of the largest expanses of temperate coastal sand dunes in the world. The science of the dunes is quite interesting if that’s really your thing, but it is certainly a bit dense of a subject to discuss here. Rather, let’s focus on the important part, how much you can enjoy exploring them.

What you’ll see

Near the beach you’ll find European Beach grass on some of the foredunes. As you move inland you might find hummocks of sand and vegetation that are surrounded by water (especially in the winter). You might even find some tree islands. These are small isolated remnants of older coastal forests.

Many of the things you see here are hauntingly beautiful as you take in the stark, mist-shrouded view. The area is home to some types of vegetation and animals you can’t find anywhere else. When you’re there, you can feel free to visit their Visitor’s Center that is about the midpoint of the Dunes. They have maps, brochures, exhibits, and more.
