Bay Point Landing, a modern RV and lodging destination, is uniquely located near many of Oregon’s most scenic and wild landscapes. Sandy beaches, rugged coastlines, temperate rainforests, and natural dunes — there is so much to discover.

In this Getaway Guide, we’ve chosen a handful of our favorite hikes, spots to explore, recreational activities, and local businesses.

    Cape Arago Loop Hike

    Distance: 3.9 Miles | Difficulty: Moderate

    If you opt to hike, this route features the quieter side of the spectacular Sunset Bay, Shore Acres, and Cape Arago complex of state parks south of Coos Bay. Follow the North and South Cove Trails to discover tide pools, beaches, and viewpoints.

    Horsfall Beach

    Distance: 11.6 miles

    Travel time from Bay Point Landing: 24 min.

    In the heart of the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area, Horsfall Beach is north of Coos Bay. A well-known spot for riding off-road vehicles, it’s a good place to swim, sunbathe, and comb the beach for seashells.

    BastenDorff Beach

    Distance: 5.5 miles

    Travel time from Bay Point Landing: 13 min.

    A dreamy stretch of sandy beach for surfers of all skill levels, Bastendorff Beach has great waves and unobstructed Pacific Ocean views. Fly kites or build sandcastles all day long, this family-friendly beach is rarely crowded.

    Sunset Bay State Park

    Distance: 6.3 miles

    Travel time from Bay Point Landing: 10 min.

    Once you reach Sunset Bay State Park, walk along the water, enjoy a packed picnic on the sandy beach, and marvel at the towering sea cliffs above. This is a great spot for birdwatching and dipping your toes in the ocean.

    Sunset Bay to Simpson Beach

    Distance: 4.7 miles round trip | Difficulty: Moderate

    A hike that begins at the cliff-walled beach of Sunset Bay State Park and ends at Shore Acres State Park, the highlight of this excursion is the expansive botanical gardens, home to plants from across the world.

    Distance: 7.6 Miles | Difficulty: Easy

    Travel time from Bay Point Landing: 10 min

    Originally the estate of Coos County timber baron, Louis J. Simpson, Shore Acres State Park sits on five acres of formal gardens, including a rose-testing area and Japanese lily pond. For beach access and ocean views, hike the trail down to Simpson Beach.

    Cape Arago State Park

    Distance: 8.8 Miles | Difficulty: Easy

    Travel Time from Bay Point Landing: 14 Min.

    At the end of the state park loop, Cape Arago State Park is great for hiking, whale watching, and fishing. Take the South Trail to check out the tide pools or the North Trail at the end of summer and beginning of fall to see the colonies of seals and sea lions.

    Clamming & Crabbing

    Fishing opportunities are in no short supply here, including shellfishing. Home to Oregon’s largest bay, clamming and crabbing seasons dominate mid-summer through fall. All you need is a valid fishing license and your GPS set to these great spots: Clam Island, Empire Point, Pigeon Point, and North Spit.

    Deep Sea Fishing

    There are more than 30 lakes and rivers to choose from in Coos County alone, but for a truly memorable experience we recommend making reservations for an ocean fishing excursion with our neighbors at Betty Kay Charters.

    Surfing

    There’s nothing like surfing on the wild, West Coast. Coos Bay has some of the best coldwater surf in Oregon. Gear up at Waxer’s Surf Shop, schedule a surf lesson, and head to Bastendorff Beach, which offers waves for beginners and rippers alike.

    Stand-Up Paddle Boarding

    An activity for all seasons, gain a new perspective and appreciation for the water with stand-up paddle boarding. There’s plenty of places to SUP in Coos Bay, less an hour from Bay Point Landing. Bring your own gear or pick up supplies at Waxer’s Surf Shop.

    Glide across placid waters on a summer evening or take a tour with fellow enthusiasts, kayaking is a thrilling way to enjoy the bay. Dip into the nearby estuary or sign up for a guided paddle with South Coast Tours.

    Oregon Dunes ATV/OHV

    The Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area is an expansive 32,000 acres of wind-sculpted sand and there are three main off-highway vehicle riding areas that provide riders with a variety of experiences: Coos Bay/North Bend Area, Florence Area, and Umpqua Riding Area.     Mountain Biking

    Inhale deeply and experience the exhilaration of riding your mountain bike through the trails near Bay Point Landing. Whiskey Run Mountain Bike Trails is a set of 22 trails, signed for appropriate skill levels, between Coos Bay and Bandon. Winchester Trails are used primarily by mountain bikers and motorcycles. The trails challenge even the best of riders along the 17 miles of winding single track.

    While there are no permanent restaurants on-site at Bay Point Landing, we do have a General Store well-stocked with provisions and there are great local restaurants in Coos Bay and nearby towns with a variety of fare to choose from.
